An organised women’s hockey competition commenced in Sutherland Shire in 1942 making hockey the oldest organised women’s team sport in the Shire. This was largely due to the work of the dynamic Oliver Burrell who the previous year had recruited teams, organised exhibitions and training games and saw Jenola Field at Caringbah allocated to the sport. NSW Women’s Hockey approved the new competition under the name of the Cronulla Section of Sydney Women’s Hockey.
Olive Burrell, a local Cronulla girl, was an Australian and State hockey player, the Shire’s first international sportswoman.
